This is it, all Construction21 chapters, who run the contest in their country, revealed their national champions! Each one of them won in their country in their respective category and therefore are now qualified to enter the international finals scheduled during the COP24 in Poland, on December 6th.
Five expert juries from various countries will select the winning buildings, districts and infrastructures among these finalists. Along with the designation of winners, the jury’s mission is to send a message to the market by highlighting innovative solutions that are interesting to replicate on a much larger scale.
National winners first, but international finalists too
To win their place in finals, first, candidates had to demonstrate their worth to national juries in their category or receive the User’s choice award, based on the online votes by Construction21 users. In France, another possibility was available to candidates, for the first time, a student jury could also promote a candidate to the international finals.
After being rewarded in their own country, winning buildings, districts and infrastructures will now be confronted with the decision of the international jurors, recruited among world experts.
NB : Candidates from countries without a Construction21 platform were evaluated by a special jury. They also benefited from an intense campaign online for the User’s choice award of the international platform.
World experts decide now
For this 2018 edition, five international juries will examine the finalists:
- Energy & Climates (temperate and hot)
- Low Carbon + Health & Comfort + Smart Building
- Grand Prizes (Sustainable Renovation + Sustainable Construction)
- Districts
- Infrastructures
31 specialists, teamed in these different juries, analyse individually each project and collectively debate to consensually select the winners of each award. For each rewarded building, district or infrastructure, the jury decides the message to be sent through that victory, hence contributing to the mission of the Green Solutions Awards: disseminating innovation at a large scale and accelerating the environmental transition of buildings, cities and territories.
Trends in 2018: human factors and biobased materials
143 candidates entered the 2018 edition of the Green Solutions Awards: 103 buildings, 16 districts and 24 infrastructures, located from 16 countries.
With the quantity and diversity of candidacies, in geography and in uses, we were able to observe trends. For instance, the care given to well-being and health of users that we saw in the 2017 edition, is confirmed. Even better, we note a new way to approach human factors in buildings: participation of future inhabitants from the design phase of the project.
Another observation: builders use more biobased materials (wood, straw, terracotta, cellulose wadding…) and we see recycled materials emerging.
Another budding trend is also seen in the Green Solutions Awards 2018: the notion of resilience among Luxembourg, English, French or Japanese candidates.

Next step: COP24 in Poland
Who will be the winners of the Green Solutions Awards 2018? You will know on December 6 at 5.30PM (GMT+1), in Poland during the COP24. The ceremony will take place in the University of Silesia, in Katowice, to reveal the names of the winners in front of 200 professionals from allover the globe. You can follow the ceremony live on site or through social media with #GreenSolutions Awards!
The event is part of the Buildings Day of COP24 and will take place right after Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction’s (GABC) Building Action Symposium, organised on that same site earlier that day.
Exceptional visibility around the world: 1.5 million views
Competing in the Green Solutions Awards is a great way to make your expertise known… and to win new markets in your country and internationally.
Though an intense on- and offline communication campaign, the contest, the candidates, sponsors and partners benefit from a massive cover on all 12 platforms of the Construction21 network, on social media and during dedicated events.
National and international ceremonies provide the winners with a great platform. Some projects are also presented in partnered trade fairs during the contest.
Visibility is also strengthened by the relay of hundreds of media partners: specialised magazines, fairs or professional associations, they all contribute to amplifying the impact of the Green Solutions Awards every year.
Each winner will also receive a video presenting their project. Easily shared, the videos will be broadly disseminated on the web and on social media. A brochure will also be published in French, English, Spanish and Chinese to highlight the winners.
The contest grows bigger every year and generated 1.5 million views in 2017, demonstrating the growing impact of the Green Solutions Awards in its dissemination role for innovations for the sector.
