The offices of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Guyana were installed in the building of the old customs of Cayenne, a listed historical monument rehabilitated previously and are accompanied by a contemporary extension located at the foot of the hill of Cépérou.

Architectural description

The opportunity to reinvest a high-potential urban abandoned by a building with a cultural vocation is only valid if it is part of a larger scale reading of the city. From a spatial point of view, this is reflected in the obligation to ask oneself the question of the place of the equipment in the network of places invested by the population and connected by circles of proximity. Our proposal integrates a space with multiple vocation: parking during the week, parvis to host events on the weekend, eventually mixing punctual functions. The logic of setting up the spaces in the existing building meets several concerns. Make the best use of the existing openings, leaving the existing structure free to highlight it, both in plan and in volume. The design of the walls of these is studied in order to capture the maximum of the important natural light deposit in Guyana, a key element of a QEA approach.
