Webinar 3 – How to use the outputs of the EPB assessments in regulation: overview of EN ISO 52003 & EN ISO 52018 (12h00 – 13h30 – 16 April 2020)

Optimizing Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB) regulations is a very challenging task! This is all the more so when the energy performance requirements become very strict.

The set of EPB standards contain the procedures to assess the overall energy performance of a building. As has been shown in the presentations of the first and second webinar of this series, many aspects are taken into account to assess the overall energy performance in a balanced way i.e. with sufficient details to appreciate the impact of the design and applied technologies in the specific context, while avoiding irrelevant complications.

In contrast to such sophisticated approach, the EP requirements are often formulated as a crude number. Such formulation may not always constitute a proper basis for judging the energetic quality of a building. This carries the risk to make it for some projects extremely hard to achieve the requirements, while for other projects the requirements may still be relatively lax.

In order to arrive at equitable requirements or a meaningful rating, a more sophisticated approach is generally needed. Among other things, this webinar will discuss this issue.

The set of EPB standards produces a great number of overall and partial EPB indicators as outputs. The regulatory use of these outputs can be called "post-processing" of the EPB assessment.

The EN ISO 52003-1 standard and its accompanying technical report (part 2) provide general insight to all stakeholders involved in the regulatory process on how to make good use of these outputs for different purposes.

The webinar will give an overview of the standard. Special attention will go to the optimization of the requirements, by tailoring them to selected features of each individual construction project. This will be illustrated with practical examples.

The webinar will also give a brief snapshot of the EN ISO 52018-1 standard and its accompanying technical report (part 2), which deal with partial EPB requirements concerning the fabric and the thermal energy balance. Here too, requirement tailoring will be illustrated.

This webinar may be particularly interesting for anyone involved in the development and understanding of EPB regulations: policy makers, administrators, stakeholder organisations, research institutes, consultants, etc. Questions can be submitted throughout the webinar, and ample time is foreseen to answer them.

The full titles of the aforementioned documents are:

EN ISO 52003:2017 Energy performance of buildings — Indicators, requirements, ratings and certificates

  • Part 1: General aspects and application to the overall energy performance (standard);
  • Part 2 (technical report): Explanation and justification of ISO 52003-1.

EN ISO 52018-2:2017 Energy performance of buildings — Indicators for partial EPB requirements related to thermal energy balance and fabric features

  • Part 1: Overview of options (standard);
  • Part 2 (technical report): Explanation and justification of ISO 52018-1.
