This quarantine period is an opportunity to discover many resources available online to enhance our understanding of future solutions to decarbonize our energy systems. The D2Grids project team D2Grids (has selected for you a set of webinars on district heating and cooling available online and provided by stakeholders from the energy sector.

1. Low temperature district heating :
Cool DH & Celsius Talk
The future is now! Decarbonised district heating systems are already here and some of them are spelled “LTDH”. As a matter of fact, low temperature district heating can prove to be an important part in keeping the globe’s temperature low as well. This webinar is hosted in partnership with COOL DH, a Swedish-Danish, EU-funded project aimed towards the development and demonstration of LTDH systems. This webinar presents some of the opportunities and challenges cities may encounter in their endeavour towards a sustainable and efficient energy system. It discusses ways to plan for the deployment of new DHC systems, as well as the extension and refurbishing of existing ones to a higher standard, using local low-grade heat sources.*

Energy Solutions for Cities of the Future - IRENA
IRENA, in the framework of the Global Geothermal Alliance, organised series of three webinars under the project “Energy Solutions for Cities of the Future.” This first webinar introduces renewable energy applications for district heating and presents the key elements of strategic heating and cooling planning as a first step for the integration of low-temperature renewable energy sources in district energy networks.

2. Heating and cooling planning made easier
HOTMAPS
Hotmaps is a free and adaptable toolbox to support public authorities, energy agencies and urban planners in strategic heating and cooling planning on local, regional and national levels, and in line with your Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan. This webinar will present the free online software, the open access datasets, the manuals and wiki. Two Covenant of Mayors Signatories, the Spanish city of San Sebastian and the Danish city of Aalborg, contributed the development of the toolbox and will illustrate their experience.

3. Energy Integration :
DHC+ Talk
Integrating renewables both from electric and thermal sources as well as waste heat leads to a more flexible, efficient and sustainable system. In this sense, district energy and thermal storage can act as a local energy backbone and help balance the grid. We will explore market barriers and pilot sites from the Magnitude project which aims at increasing and optimising synergies between electricity, gas and heat systems.

4. Improving district heating networks
New solutions for sustainable district heating in European cities
The RELaTED H2020 project is exploring an innovative concept of decentralized Ultra-Low Temperature district heating network which allows for the incorporation of low-grade heat sources with minimal constraints, larger shares of renewable energy sources and distributed heat sources. This webinar presents the current policy framework and financing options available to decarbonize the sector. It also introduces the RELaTED ultra-low district heating concept which offers innovative solutions for integrating renewable and low-carbon energy sources into heating and cooling systems.

DHC+ Talk: District Heating Upgrade
Usually, the overall upgrading process to improve the efficiency of DH grids is complex and sophisticated. It is time-consuming, long-lasting and implies high investments. UpgradeDH partners aim at simplifying this process by providing guidance and their expertise in strategies, contracts, stakeholder engagement, business models, and other non-technical aspects of upgrading projects.

5. The STORM project
The STORM project is an EU-funded project that was running from March 2015 to March 2019. The project tackles energy efficiency at district level by developing an innovative district heating & cooling (DHC) network controller.
The project partners have developed a controller based on self-learning algorithms, which is currently experimented in the two STORM demo sites: Mijnwater BV in Heerlen (Netherlands) and Växjö Energi in Rottne (Sweden). The developed controller enables to maximize the use of waste heat and renewable energy sources in DHC networks.
The project proposes, in partnership with ZUYD Hogeschool, a series of 4 webinars available online and in English, allowing to apprehend the world of heating and cooling networks:
- Part 1: An introduction into the world of energy and the need for heating and cooling networks
- Part 2: History and functioning of heating & cooling networks
- Part 3: Smart District Heating & Cooling in Rottne, Sweden
- Part 4: Smart District Heating & Cooling in Heerlen, the Netherlands
