Abandoned mine workings have for long been regarded as a liability. This is rapidly changing. Mines are yet again becoming a source of energy and wealth. This time it’s about using mines as a source of sustainable and carbon free heating to businesses and residents above ground. There are currently multiple projects in delivery across the UK, and more to come. The potential is huge – there are some 28 000 abandoned mines in the UK. In order to secure delivery there is now a need to address the capability and capacity gaps by mobilising the supply chain, training providers, operators and other key stakeholders.
