Bioelektra wants to change the way people think of waste management.

Thanks to our RotoSTERIL technology, municipal waste is not a problem anymore. It is a source of useful materials, fertilizer and energy. We have designed and implemented a process, which treats unsegregated municipal waste and recovers all the materials, leaving only ca. 4% of leftovers for landfills. It can be achieved with no separate collection of waste, with no harm to environment and with full support of local societies.

Bioelektra is the owner of first waste treatment plant utilizing RotoSTERIL technology and is in dialogue with communities from numerous countries in the world. We aim to show the people, that circular economy in municipal waste system is ready – today.

The core of Bioelektra activity is the RotoSTERIL process, own-made technology of mechanical - heat waste treatment. It is designed to treat unsegregated waste (with no need of separate collection). Mixed waste is sterilized in RotoSTERIL BEG 7000 machines in high temperature and high pressure, which stops all biological life in waste and makes it odorless. The process stops CO2, CH4 (methane) and other GHGs emissions. Sterilized waste is also dry and can be easily segregated with greater effectiveness than any other known technology. This allows for maximization of the sorting result of the clean secondary raw materials: metals, plastics and glass with astonishing success rates. Thanks to the sterilization process conducted with the own-design software we are able to separate the organic fraction from the municipal waste in the highest quality. It comes out of the process in the form of biomass, which can have several uses: as a fertilizer, soil improver or alternatively as local, renewable source of energy or as addition to construction materials.

    ​Worldwide, waste is considered to be a problem with no simple solution. Most of waste management policies and systems in the world depend on people's involvement. If people are taught and willing to segregate waste precisely and to deliver them to proper collection points - waste management system works all right. But if only people lose their engagement, waste comes back to be a serious problem. Bioelektra finds waste to be a resource, not a problem. It is a source of raw materials, biomass and fuel. With proper technologies implemented, this source does not depend on people any more. Our technology allows to recover all materials from mixed municipal waste, even those considered to be difficult or impossible to segregate, leaving only 4% of waste to be landfilled.     RotoSTERIL technology is an odourless, emission-free process implemented within a closed, compact building.The first Bioelektra facility utilizing this technology is located in the northern Poland area called Warmia & Mazury, which are the Polish green lungs. It has no negative impact on local societies or environment, but even improves the level of waste management in the region.

    One of main advantages of RotoSTERIL is, that the facility can be located within the city borders and cause no negative social impact. Moreover, the influence on environment is minimized, as the waste logistics are simplified, transport is reduced and carbon footprint decreases. Technology can also contribute to fight the problem of smog in the cities.

    Most important improvement for the well-being and quality of life of the local community and social issues are the following:

    • improving the air quality through keeping the waste and the process odorless
    • simplifying the waste collection system – lowering traffic and carbon footprint
    • keeping at the same level or even lowering the costs of waste management for local communities
    • boost to the sustainability levels and improvement of the local economics
    • offering skilled labor job creation instead of low-skilled, hazardous work conditions manual sorting jobs

    ​RotoSTERIL technology does not only cause no harm to environment, but has great positive impact, thanks to:

    • recovering secondary raw materials, that are usually disposed on landfills, thus saving the significant amount of natural resources that could have been used in production
    • saving the energy that is used in production of different materials: recycling plastics can save 60% in comparison to primary production, recycling ferrous metals: 84% and recycling aluminum: even 95% energy savings
    • reducing GHG emissions in comparison to landfills, composting and incinerating waste, as carbon is kept in biomass fraction
    • no negative footprint on the environment during and after (!) operations
    • full scalability and modularity allows for lowering the carbon footprint associated with transportation
    • ability to produce green fuels from waste allows to replace coal and biomass, decrease CO2 emmissions and lower the cost and carbon footprint of transportation of the biomass (wood or green) imported or transported from afar

    ​The Bioelektra installation is built to withstand most of the natural hazards and disruptions.All of the process takes place under the roof, thus the changing weather or climate conditions play no role.

    In the case of the need to replace the elements of the system like autoclaves, time to replace is no more than 1 day, as this is a plug-and-play system.

    ​What efforts have been made to limit consumption as well as rational use of natural resources? What systems have been implemented to reduce energy consumption

    The sterilization system is designed in the way to preserve the energy used and minimize the energy input. This is performed through the following means:

    • Closed loop system for the steam circulation with minimal or no loss
    • Insulation of the autoclaves leading to lower energy demand
    • Water-saving/ steam condensation and water from waste extraction, cleaning and re-use
    • Using the sorting equipment with high energy efficiency

    Insulation of the plant building allowing to eliminate the need for the heating and cooling systems

    ​The Bioelektra conducts its business according to the best practices. As a joint-stock company it is supervised by the Supervisory Board which accepting all strategic decisions and budgetary decisions. The management board consist of 4 members thus the key decisions are made in the transparent and collegial manner, whilst operational mangers are responsible for the day to day operations. The project management is conducted with best practices and based on the thorough financial modelling process based on the conservative approach. As a rule, the company engages in the projects with no more than 10 years pay-back period with commercially available funding, assuming that no subsidies or grants are or will be available, this approach secures the solid basis for availability of the equity and external financing regardless whether the Bioelektra or third party is an investor.

Economic:

RotoSTERIL technology utilized by Bioelektra provides profits from selling the high-quality fractions obtained from the process, while the traditional technologies require to base the business model on “gate fees” (charge for waste reception at the gate of treatment plant). 

Our implementation of circular economy technology generated economical profits for the company itself and the region. Mixed municipal waste, which is usually simply disposed on landfills or transformed to the fuel, became a source of secondary raw materials, enriching the local recycling market. The costs of waste collection system are kept at the same level.

RotoSTERIL technology was also valued by polish Ministry of Environment, who awarded it a prize in prestigious contest for green technologies designed in Poland. It has been also awarded in "The Circulars 2017" People's Choice - the award presented during the World Economic Forum in Davos and "Energy Globe Poland 2017" - the award called environmental protection Nobel Prize.
