Energy-intensive building

As part of the marketing of one of its office buildings in Rueil-Malmaison, BNP PARIBAS Real Estate created a Marketing Suite.

In line with its environmental commitments linked to the construction of this building, a low-carbon approach was favoured by excluding new furniture from the project.

This is why the BNP PARIBAS REAL ESTATE CSR team embarked on this project, accompanied by Square Solution and Kataba, to equip the Marketing Suite with furniture: --> reused --> recycled --> upcycled --> eco-designed. We are proud today to have a Marketing Suite with a greatly reduced carbon footprint in line with our environmental values.

Located in Rueil-Malmaison, NODEA is a central element of a privileged district at the foot of the RER A. The building is located in the heart of this new district which links central Paris, the La Défense business district and the western suburbs of Paris, near the banks of the Seine and the Ile des Impressionnistes.

NODEA is an innovative project where modernism is combined with nature. Vegetation is inherent to the project and places serenity, comfort and harmony at the very heart of the building concept. Its silhouette and general volumetry give it the appearance of an urban cocoon.

Sustainable design

    • Upcycled wood at Claustra & Evolpes platform + office island & Emmaüs high tables + tea cups & Gepetto sorting bins. The origin of the deposit is specific to each supplier but they all followed traditional carpentry processes during production.
    • Biosourced wood with Kataba meeting table + 2 Dizy coffee tables (biosourced wood & recycled badminton shuttlecock top) + Kataba desk + Dizy desk. All this wood comes from sustainably managed French or European forests.
    • Kataba recycled latex foam on sofa and 2 armchairs. First foam available on the market with such a low carbon footprint.

More than an objective, the reuse of materials is an integral part of the offer of Square Solutions (fitter) and Kataba (first supplier on this project). Following our brief, Square Solutions designed the space to cater for the contemporary uses expected in new collaborative workspaces, spaces where the materials used are easily moved, but also reusable. Then, Square Solutions mobilised on its ecosystem of circular economy suppliers. Given the deadlines, it was necessary to use a majority of furniture available in the catalogue, but it was also essential to design custom-made furniture. Square Solutions has therefore carried out, in consultation with BNP Paribas Real Estate, certain trade-offs between deadlines, harmonization and budget to best meet the demand.

Critical analysis: the mix of biosourced and recovered/upcycled wood is essential because the sector does not yet have sufficient structuring to meet the demand for upcycling only. The salvaged wood deposit remains a random parameter that requires flexibility. It is by carrying out projects like this that we allow all the players in the sector to grow gradually and adapt to the realities of the market.

    • 6 Roland Garos meeting chairs

In 2019, Roland Garros carried out major restructuring work and demolished its court n°1. Kataba and BNP Paribas Roland Garros then decided to reuse the seat shells of this historic court to create a symbolic piece around this Grand Slam. By designing and producing this limited edition of approximately 400 chairs, Kataba offers a sentimental, iconic and circular object. Six of these chairs are now reused in the Marketing Suite.

    • A platform and its screen: Evolpes

It is a young entrepreneur from Nantes who built this tailor-made structure. Using an artisanal manufacturing process, Erwan makes hand-made furniture from reclaimed wood. It is a mix of spruce from different origins. Some boards were destined for scrap, the wood having too many "defects" for sale (too many knots, some split areas) or machine cutting errors. Other boards come from the decor of "Stereolux", a performance hall in Nantes.

    • 2 high tables: Atelier Emmaüs

The high tables are made in Villeurbanne (69). Atelier Emmaüs recovers melamine chipboard trays from old offices. The visible side is covered with a material from the recycling of plastic bottles, called Le Pavé. The underside has kept its original decor.

    • A “T01” table: Kataba

This publisher offers a range of office furniture whose legs and recycled tops are made of wood. The T01 table is lit by a lamp at its end. Assembled in Maine et Loire, the legs are made of French oak from sustainably managed forests. The top is in fact a door salvaged from a construction site, the Tarkett finishing of which was carried out in an integration workshop called Initiatives Solidaires (93).

    • Block of 3 offices: Atelier Emmaüs

These are old doors that serve as trays for these desks whose small visible holes help to tell the 2nd life of the product. In order to guarantee harmony, the visible side is laminated with a decor imitating the light oak of the neighboring offices. The underside is covered with a recovery laminate. The legs are in solid recycled beech. Everything is assembled in Villeurbanne (69) by people in integration.

    • Tea cupboard and sorting bins: Gepetto (Tricycle Environnement Group)

The tea cupboard and the containers were manufactured by Gepetto in Gennevilliers (92). Five people in integration worked on it. In a logic of short circuit, Gepetto is supplied with materials via the other activities of the group: Tricycle Environnement and Tricycle Curage.

    • 2 "Banvilles" pendant lights: Kataba

The BANVILLE pendant lamp is made using the metal spinning technique in a craft workshop in Seine-et-Marne. It takes its name from the real estate program from which came the first reused sheets from which it was fashioned.

    • A sofa, an armchair with armrests and tablet, 2 simple armchairs: Kataba

Thanks to recycled latex foam combined with an eco-designed textile, placed on a French oak structure, the seating system of the "Common" collection achieves unparalleled environmental performance. Designed as a hybrid system, able to respond to the variety of residential or professional uses, Common offers a diversity of configurations and a modularity suitable for inhabiting all places of interaction and sharing.

    • 2 coffee tables: Dizy x Compo Plume

Made in Lille, these three-material tables are made of oak from sustainably managed forests, a top made of recyclable French steel and an innovative material from the recycling of badminton shuttlecocks, called Compo Plume.

When a prospect takes possession of a building, or simply R+3, the Marketing Suite will no longer exist. Indeed, it is an ephemeral space that allows the prospect to easily project himself into the entire building. Thus, the Marketing Suite will no longer have its place within it. At Nodéa, the goal was to prove that it is possible to fully furnish this demonstration space, aesthetically, with materials from the circular economy.

However, it should be specified here that the furniture present in the Marketing Suite will either be reused in the spaces of the building, or moved to other sites in order to give them, in any case, a 3rd life.

    Materials purchased new:

    • 2 TV screen supports

    • 1 drink cellar/fridge

Out of a total of 67 pieces of furniture, only these 3 elements were purchased new without environmental criteria. Objective for the project: to find professional capital goods of the right dimensions, from a French reconditioning sector.

    Biobased materials:

    • A meeting table

In bio-sourced oak, this table was assembled in Maine et Loire. It was an integration workshop in the 93 which took care of the finishing.

    • 3 of 7 offices

Kataba and Dizy provide 3 of the 7 offices. Made of bio-based wood, they are customizable.

Environmental assessment

The reuse economy saved the equivalent of 7287 km traveled by a small car, ie 8 Paris-Nice journeys, 7168 rectangular bathtubs filled with water and 1 year of French household waste.

This table shows the savings made for:

    • 17 chairs
    • 2 coffee tables
    • 2 armchairs
    • 2 lights

Those made for: a sofa, a wardrobe, 2 TV screens, a platform, 1 tea cupboard, 4 sorting bins are missing. In addition, among the 8 coffee tables, 6 are normal tables.

    • 1 sofa
    • 1 cabinet
    • 2 TV screens
    • 1 stage
    • 1 tea cupboard
    • 4 sorting bins
    • 6 tables

Reproductibility and Innovation

The main stages of the project & reuse process:

    1. Client brief / contact with Kataba then Square Solutions
    2. Space planning with Square Solutions
    3. Search for the right furniture by Square Solutions
    4. Delivery, installation with Square Solutions
    5. Additional work: finishing/decoration (plants purchased from a garden center in Rueil Malmaison (less than 100 meters), 100% cellulose wallpaper glued to water and totally recyclable, customization of the "locker" furniture reused in line with the colors of the Marketing Suite.

The main obstacle was that once after receiving the first order, the Marketing Suite provided a "vacuum" effect.

To solve this problem, we went, on the one hand, to look for plants in a nearby garden center and, on the other hand, we contacted Square Solution in order to provide us with wallpaper to add depth to the room.

The purpose of this Marketing Suite is to show different prospects that what is doable in a small space can be replicated in a larger area.

Economic assessment

  • 52 800
  • 72 %

Social economy

An integration workshop at 93 called Initiative Solidaire is in charge of finishing the meeting table.

The island of 3 desks and the 2 high tables located in the cafeteria area, made by the Emmaus workshop, were assembled in Villeurbanne by people in professional integration.

Five people in professional integration worked on the tea cupboard made by Gepetto in Gennevilliers.

Within the circular ecosystem presented above, some players are also part of the social and solidarity economy:

    • Solidarity Initiatives
    • Emmaus workshop
    • Gepetto
    • Trycicle
