Festa de la Ciència, Barcelona

This past weekend, 26 and 27th of October, the Sostenipra research group from ICTA-UAB, along with the GROOF project took part in the Science fair “Festa de la Ciència” coordinated by the City of Barcelona. It was the 13th edition performed at the public space “Moll de la Fusta” during which lots of citizens who were interested in science and technology got the opportunity to be closer to the different topics related to technological advances and catch up on current problematics that science and technology are helping to solve. During both days we shared street spaces with several universities, research institutes, governmental associations and other groups with the expectations of promoting science projects. The Sostenipra group, worked to spread the benefits and the applicability of our Social and Environmental research to bring healthy life to the cities. Through GROOF and Fertilecity, we promoted sustainable and ecofriendly urban food production on rooftops. Basic information for a successful implementation of an urban agriculture systems was given to around a thousand people who approached the GROOF stand.

We also developed a couple of dynamic activities from our stand which included a lettuce degustation of our indoor (Indoor Greenhouse, using artificial lighting/LEDs) and outdoor (Rooftop Greenhouse) production. About 400 people attended the lettuce degustation. 51% voted for outside lettuces and 49% indoor lettuce. In addition, 99% of people voted for excellent to good testing lettuces, giving different opinions about flavor and consistence. Finally, some of our material was also donated for those families that were about to start their greenhouses at home.
