Energy-intensive building
Within Rural Excellence Center « Pays du Livre et de l’Ecriture », the Community of Municipalities of Forcalquier and Montagne de Lure (CCPFML) decided in 2008 to rehabilitate the former police station in the city and turn it into a building dedicated to book professionals: La Maison des Métiers du Livre (MML). This building, in its early conception, was to follow a sustainable development approach (rehabilitation rath originality of the project was obvious to see in its architecture. It combines metal, wood and polycarbonate screen on the front, the building stands out while fitting perfectly into the landscape. At the same time, it gives a proprietary interest in Forcalquier - Montagne de Lure, which for centuries has inspired many writers, graphic designers, calligraphers and others.

Sustainable development approach of the project owner

CCPFML's first aim was to run for the Rural Excellence Center project which was meant as a urban planning system designed to support innovative projects, as much as directly and indirectly creating jobs in rural areas. Forcalquier is known to have a high concentration of editors, graphic designers and other writing professionals. The choice of creating a "Maison des métiers du livre" to bring these actors together became obvious. Rather than demolish the house, the town chose to rehabilitate the former police station in the city while integrating sustainable development in its approach.

Architectural description

The architect did not hesitate to artistically invest into the project: he proposed to integrate into the building two works of Marie Morel, local artist who lived in Forcalquier with her parents, an editor and a designer. These works echo with the theme of writing and are in perfect harmony with the soul of the building. "Inside Space" (3) therefore adorns the corridor, "The Forest" (5), meanwhile, dresses shutters. As part of the rehabilitation, the building structure and the framework were maintained. The whole façades have been included. The project required close to no insulation or ventilation. The single-glazed windows, in very bad condition, were replaced as well as every the plumbing, electricity and fuel-based heating elements.
