Energy-intensive building

The Crematorium intercommunal project is located in the heart of the new industrial zone of Butay, located south-west of the commune of Château-Thébaud. The proximity of the motorway A83, the RN 249 and the departmental road 137 gives this crematorium a strategic geographical location. Two companies currently occupy the Butay area, including a plaster manufacturing company that has a strong impact on the territory and its environment. These impacts are visual (silo about 50 meters) and auditory (manufacturing machine noise and Flow of hearses). It can therefore be said that the crematorium is a project with a sensitive vocation, installing itself in a "sensitive" site. In this context, it is not only a question of building a strong symbolic building, but of taking into consideration the whole of its environment and ensuring that families coming to crematize one of their loved ones plunges into A process of mourning and recollection, ignoring this industrial environment. The need is particularly identified. Indeed, a single crematorium (located north of Nantes) now serves cremation service for a population of more than 800,000 inhabitants (within a radius of 30 km) and generating more than 6,000 deaths. More than 2500 cremations are currently being carried out in this crematorium with longer and longer waiting times. In the collective consciousness, the crematorium is inseparable from mourning, where cremation remains a funerary practice strongly connoted and far from our historically religious customs. In recent years, for economic reasons and socio-cultural changes, mentalities have changed in terms of funerals and the after-death of the body. More and more families are now choosing cremation. This type of building has been designed to fulfill a precise and technical function, but it must above all help the family and loved ones of the deceased to live well this crucial stage in the process of mourning. The project must not only respond to an architectural program, but it must help to support families in this ordeal, not make it more traumatic. The crematorium includes a reception, a ceremonial hall with 100 seats and a reception room for families, technical rooms, rest room for staff, cremation space.

Reasons for participating in the competition(s)
