R20 Regions of Climate Action and Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation announce first results of the 100 Climate Solutions Project Campaign as the first milestone for unlocking finance in sub-national green infrastructure projects

MARRAKESH, GENEVA and LOS ANGELES - November 12th, 2016

Following the entry into force of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement in November 2016, prior to COP 22, R20 Regions of Climate Action "R20" and Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation "LDF" presented the results of the 100 Climate Solutions Project Campaign launched in April 2016. These results were highlighted today in a COP22 side event hosted by R20 and its partners.

The campaign has actively involved a number of networks and associations of sub-national authorities including ORU-FOGAR, AER, ICLEI, FMDV, SALGA and TGO. More than 650 waste management, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects have been received among which 400 of them, potentially worth 2.5 billion USD, are being published on R20's new website.

These very encouraging results demonstrate that low carbon infrastructure projects can be replicated and scaled up worldwide. R20 and LDF want to thank all cities and regions around the world that answered our call and helped build this impressive portfolio of green infrastructure projects.

To respond to this challenge, LDF is mobilizing philanthropists and institutional investors for the Planet Pledge Fund (PPF), which will help to finance sustainable development projects that directly mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, such as waste management, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, with net earnings donated to efforts to protect and restore vital ecosystems.

On its side, R20 is working on a number of Pre-Investment Facilities, which will finance feasibility studies to allow bankability of projects. R20 is also working on the Green Investment Accelerator Facility, which will enable additional investments.

These facilities are paramount to ensuring that projects meet bankability criteria and yield high ecological and socio-economic benefits.
