September was a busy month for the project BIGG. The Consortium finally met “physically” for the 1st PMB meeting in Thessaloniki and took part in a virtual workshop during the Sustainable Places Conference.
domX hosted the first physical PMB (Project Management Board) meeting of the project BIGG in Thessaloniki, Greece on September 21-23. During this 3-days meeting, more than 30 colleagues gathered physically for the first time since the project began. The current status of the project was discussed and the partners agreed on the next steps for the upcoming months.
Thessaloniki was the city chosen for this first physical meeting, being the location of pilot testing sites, together with the city of Volos. The pilot sites will demonstrate the application of Demand Response management for electricity and gas consumption monitoring. Residential consumers can tune the operation of their heating system through a smartphone application and let the controller optimally adapt the heating operation to their comfort limits, weather conditions and building characteristics.
During the PMB meeting, the project objectives and the project plan were reviewed together with the technical objectives and achievements. There were different presentations of the current status of the project, as well as transversal discussions with respect to the technical challenges of the project.
Furthermore, the marketing material of BIGG was presented, among which the flyers and posters, which can be found on the website, and the project video which will be available soon.
BIGG also contributed to the 9th annual edition of the Sustainable Places conference (SP2021), a hybrid event from September 28 to October 1st hosted in Rome, Italy. Renowned for showcasing results coming out of the EU Horizon 2020 Framework Programme via the participation of cutting-edge research and innovation projects, the scope of Sustainable Places is captured directly in its name. It involves designing, building and retrofitting the places where we live and work, in a more sustainable way.
SP2021 combined in-person plenary sessions and digital stream for the online audience and digital workshops. Opening and closing keynote sessions, parallel technical sessions and project-organized workshops explored the following conference topics:
- Buildings / renovation / energy performance
- Renewable energy technologies / platforms
- Smart grids and cities / energy communities
- Policies / certifications / behaviours
- Circular economy / business models
- BIM / Digitalisation / energy modelling
On September 29 took place the virtual workshop “Data and Intelligence sharing for transforming buildings into active nodes in the future energy system” organized by BEYOND, where BIGG participated together with other EU-funded projects, as is the case of DOMOS, RES4BUILD, RESCOOP VPP, MATRYCS and MERLON.
In this workshop, elite researchers from the Horizon 2020 projects mentioned above, as well as other research teams, engaged in presentations and discussions, shared lessons learned from the implementation of their activities and projects and defined possible synergies and collaboration opportunities around specific topics of interest:
- Data-driven monitoring and assessment of energy performance in buildings
- Big Data technologies for the management and processing of data generated in buildings
- Advanced AI data analytics toolkits and models/algorithms for the optimization of building energy performance
- Innovative, data (intelligence)-driven energy services for buildings and beyond.
- End-to-end data security and privacy
- Trusted data sharing of building-relevant data and new business models
The presentations, round tables, sharing of open tools and know-how provided all the participants with recommendations related to energy services to promote to the different stakeholders. Furthermore, through this workshop novel concepts, use cases and data-driven business scenarios will emerge to extend the application of the participants’ work.
