GBCI Europe opens for business

On 27 April at the LEED European Summit in Berlin, Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) President and CEO Mahesh Ramanujam announced the opening of a new office in Europe. Located in Munich, GBCI Europe will help drive the adoption of green building and business practices across the region, fostering global competitiveness and enhancing environmental performance and human health benefits. GBCI is the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green building industry performance and practice globally.

“Europe has been a leader of the green building market for a long time and we are continuing to see tremendous interest and support for LEED in the region,” said Ramanujam. “Market transformation happens one project a time, and Europe has an opportunity to continue to drive sustainability at a global scale. By establishing a local GBCI presence in Europe, we will serve to further facilitate the global growth of a sustainable built environment locally and across the globe.”

GBCI Europe will support the deployment of its green building certifications and professional credentialing products, includingLEED, the world’s most widely used green building rating system. Currently, there are over 5,200 LEED projects in Europe comprising more than 100,000,000 gross square meters of space.

According to the 2016 Dodge Data & Analytics Smart Market Study on World Green Building Trends, Europe is poised for even greater expansion of green buildings in the coming years. The study found that over 60 percent of respondents anticipate that their projects will be green by 2018 and over a five-year period respondents expect 14 percent operational savings for new green buildings and 13 percent operations savings for existing buildings, the bulk of Europe’s building stock.

GBCI is the only certification and credentialing body within the green business and sustainability industry to exclusive administer project certifications and professional credentials and certificates for  LEEDPEER , SITES , Parksmart , EDGEWELLZero Waste, Investor Confidence Project (ICP), which receives funding from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and GRESB, which is used by institutional investors to improve the sustainability performance of the global property sector.

In 2016, GBCI and U.S. Green Building Council developed Arc, a state-of-the-art digital platform that allows any project to measure performance, track improvement and benchmark against itself and similar projects. Arc calculates a performance score based on global building data and action-oriented strategies across five categories: energy, water, waste, transportation and human experience. Arc’s data-centric approach enables projects to make more informed decisions that help improve sustainability performance incrementally and allows them to work towards other green rating system certifications.
