Climate-KIC supports innovation in the “IoT & Cleantech” event
Last month, Climate-KIC France participated in the event on ‘The contribution of connected objects to reduce our carbon footprint‘.
From smart watch to home automation, via agricultural data modeling, connected objects – IoT – are everywhere. They will play a key role in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
IoT, innovation and climate
The startups CybeleTech and Safety Line, members of the Accelerator Programme also attended as speakers. Set in the in the amphitheater of BPI France, the event gathered investors, entrepreneurs and corporates such as Safran Venture, Suez, EIT Digital, KIC Inno Ennergy and Deloitte.
Benoist Vercherin, Climate-KIC France Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lead, member of the the panel, commented: “I agree with the conception of a systemic approach to innovation vs technology alone. This, both for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. […] The economic value of the solutions is also created by connecting different ideas and concepts. This is especially true for sustainable cities. It might be difficult to determine if a CO2 reduction of more than 18% overall in the coming years is realistic, but we already now know that CO2 negative cities are possible in associating IoT, CO2 storage, and behavior change.”
Next generation startups pitches
Among innovative start-ups from the IoT sector and cleantech, CybeleTech andWI6Labs pitched. These entrepreneurs presented the issues of data development linked to the rationalization of agriculture and forestry through their collaboration. Their common objective is to adapt plants to climate change.
Cybeletech analyzes the data to make smart agriculture (in reducing water consumption or the use of fertilizers for instance), against the controversies of intensive agriculture such as vines, wheat, rice, potatoes, cotton). To be sustainable in the context of a growth of the world population, agriculture will have to produce 50% more products, while consuming 30% less. Today the idea is to take the solution developed for agriculture and to adapt it to smart cities.
The immediate future of IoT
IoT could represent a potential market of 90 billion dollars by 2020, a key asset to reach the 18.6% reduction of greenhouse gases globally. With a rapid growth in the health and digital sectors, IoT are one of the most promising innovation for green growth. In the short term, it means about billions of IoT users.
