Climate-KIC launches COP21 Calculator in partnership with FT
Climate-KIC has developed the COP21 Calculator in collaboration with the Financial Times. The interactive tool shows the effectiveness of the countries’ COP21 pledges to prevent climate change.
The climate pledges to 2030, orIntended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), have been published by the countries since February to create a roadmap for an effective binding deal at the COP21 climate change summit in December 2015.
The new COP21 Calculator shows what would happen if countries curbed emissions in line with their pledges. It also indicates that the current emissions pathway from these combined pledges could place the world on a trajectory of 4 degrees of warming by 2100.
It is accepted that a global temperature rise above 2 degrees of warming would be “catastrophic” for the global economy. To stay below 2 degrees the calculator allows you to dynamically assess how much more heavy lifting is needed in the short, medium and long term.
Finally, the Calculator allows you to decide for yourself which countries should take the lead in putting emissions on a downward trajectory, by creating your own scenario and sharing it with your contacts.
The COP21 Calculator shows that we are facing a colossal, but not impossible challenge. The acceptance of that challenge is vital in order for politicians and policymakers to set an ambitious global deal at COP21.
