Canberra’s Climathon: Smart City Meets Climate Challenge

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.  In Canberra the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October AEST and finish on the following day. It is organised by the Canberra Innovation Network in collaboration with Renewables Energy Precinct and Hub to create new solutions that connect the smart city and renewable energy opportunities.

The Challenge

By 2020, more than 90% of Canberra’s electricity supply will be from large-scale renewables, contributing to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Canberra is internationally-recognised centre for renewable energy innovation and investment. Canberra Innovation Network has established the Renewable Energy Precinct and Hub in the CBD where innovators in the sector are co-locating and collaborating on addressing the renewable energy opportunities. Canberra is ambitious and encourages all entrepreneurs, innovators, scientists, industry and business leaders to work together to identify big problems and find, test and bring to market new solutions that connect the smart city and renewable energy opportunities.

Pitching to expert judges

The Climathon event will culminate in presentation of each group’s idea in front of panel members who will provide valuable feedback. The panel is comprised of different science and business experts.

Partners

Canberra Innovation Network

The CBR Innovation Network has been established by the ACT Government and the ACT’s innovation community to play a major role in accelerating innovation and growth to maximise wealth creation and transformation of the ACT economy.

The diversification of the ACT’s economy requires a partnership between the key players to ensure that the ecosystem supports company growth and job creation. The CBR Innovation Network will work with all stakeholders to build on the strengths and opportunities of Canberra’s economy to achieve this.
