[D2Grids] Vito and Greenflex deliver the results of its market survey on existing heating network components

The goal of D2Grids is to speed up the decarbonizing energy transition by rolling out 5th generation district heating and cooling networks (5GDHC). The first step in the strategy was to make up a status of  the existing relevant technologies.

Therefore Greenflex, together with VITO and BRGM, completed a Market Survey. The sources of these thermal network can vary for every region: geothermal; sea or riverbed and lake systems; waste heat recovery; thermal solar . Besides of sources, thermal storage is essential in the 5GDHC networks: the technologies can be subdivides in sensible heat and latent heat solutions. As these networks operate with very low temperatures, heat pumps will have a crucial role in the setup of the network.

This survey will be the base document to define the  remaining challenges and the potential for every technology within the low temperature district heating and cooling networks.

These networks will be connected not only to thermal energy. Therefore a summary of other energy sources is included as well: electricity, hydrogen, etc.

Another important goal for D2Grids is to lower the overall costs in the end so this will accelerate the rolling out of the technology. This Market Survey will also help to highlight the standardization potentials and to understand which technologies are suitable within this 5th generation district heating and cooling.
