Officially launched in 2009 the SB Alliance is gathering international research institutes, certification bodies and other players of the building industry. The research aims at answering the need of the real estate industry for the harmonization of environmental performance metrics. Indeed the existing methods of sustainable building assessment are now widely used but they all have their own criteria, which make them difficult to compare. The first deliverable was a draft framework for common metrics, finalized in 2010, a cooperative work among the following European certification bodies and building research institutes: BRE (UK), DGNB (Germany), VTT (Finland), QUALITEL (France) and CSTB (France). The goal was to cooperate on the identification of common indicators, in order to avoid developing a new assessment system.

Now the pilot test study on these indicators has been published and shows possible harmonization between the 6 participants: France, Germany, Spain, Finland, Czech Republic and the US.
