An award to promote sustainable actions with a local impact

FEDARENE, The European Federation of Agencies and Regions for Energy and Environment, created the Roger Léron Award. This award must distinguish a proactive approach over time which contributed to sustainable energy at local or regional level.

The prize is also a tribute to Roger Léron, President of FEDARENE from 1990 to 2007 and of RAEE (Rhône-Alpes Energy Environment) from 1995 to 2013. "He was a man of conviction, he became interested early on energy and environment issues and their connection to territories. He was also one of the founders of our organisation in 1978, " says Christian Labie, director of RAEE. "Throughout his career as President, he achieved to reach strong consensus at regional level and with other agencies among FEDARENE, that's why we wanted to dedicate him an award”.

The goals of the award

The competition itself is particular. It is not about competing on your own. One can nominate a person or an organisation that has worked on the long term on  sustainable energy at the local level or in a region. It can be an elected political, an agency, an association or a company. Sustainable energy covers actions such as:

  • promotion and education on environmentally friendly practices;
  • energy efficiency in public, private or residential buildings;
  • the use of renewable energy;
  • strengthening local and regional expertise in energy;
  • support for energy efficiency measures in different sectors;
  • promotion of modern energy solutions to the public;
  • promotion of clean transport ..

Candidates must come from Europe and applications must be applied before 15 April. (Registrations)

Among the pool of candidates, five nominees will be selected by an international jury to choose then a winner who will be announced on June 16th  in Brussels.

"This competition is meant to help territories to progress in local energy policies. We want to reward a long-term policy, a set of actions, a vision ... you could say a lifeswork" says Christian Labie. "All members of FEDARENE want to share this vision and disseminate it. This tribute is therefore a great opportunity for regional agencies to highlight the actions on their territories, and the personalities and organizations that implement them."

The RAEE, a founding member of FEDARENE, is well placed to recognize these actions on the long term. RAEE works since 1978 in the energy management by local communities in the Rhône-Alpes. Currently the agency is working with the French Green Building Plan (Plan Bâtiment Durable) to implement the Regional Green Building Plan in Rhône-Alpes. "We have several major projects in progress on various topics: energy sharing at local level, biogas with farmers, implementation and monitoring of Energy Performance Contracts," said Christian Labie. "We are also working on a new concept: the photovoltaic village plants" an idea that already interests other regions in France and in Europe.
